Propaganda

I saw a heartbreaking video this morning. This abortion issue really hits close to home after losing a baby. However all of the anti-McCain and anti-Obama videos that have been floating around from inbox to inbox the past couple of years still amaze me. People will make comments about these videos like "I can't believe [insert politicians name here] is doing this" or "This politician completely supports [insert big political issue here]."

The statements people pull from these videos are almost as shocking as the videos themselves. I guess that biggest shocker is that people are totally buying in to propaganda without even realizing it. They don't take a step back and think, that was a video of one persons testimony and then a couple of pictures of a politician looking mean ... grrrr. Translation: It was a manipulated video to make me believe something that may not be entirely true.

Someone recently said to me, "Well, they wouldn't put it on TV unless it was true." This person was also trained in the Journalism and Mass Communications field ... And lately it seems the general public feels the same way about You Tube.

I'm ready for people to stop believing what they see on TV (and to stop watching so much TV in general, but that is another issue ... )

Given, the video I watched this morning and many of the videos are outlining a really serious issue in our society. However, pulling politicians into the problem for the sake of propaganda is just as much a pollutant as our over sized SUV's. So many of these issues, especially those of the conservative right, are issues that politicians will most likely never fix. They are too controversial - politicians and political parties may always sway from side to side in an effort to win elections. These are huge issues, issues that are important to God and issues that require Christians to be at the front lines.

I've been so amazed and proud of Ethan the last year. We've learned so much, and even more about what full-time ministry looks like for our family. For years, we had assumed it would be in a church setting and I'm ashamed to think we drew those kind of lines around what God could do with us and where. It's crazy to look back because we've never drawn geographical lines, but for a short time we drew occupational lines.

After praying for months, God put Ethan in the job He had waiting for him. Some of our pastors pointed out to me that we prayed and prayed for the "right" job for Ethan and it seemed to never come. Little did we know that God was waiting for the perfect moment so that Ethan could  begin his training with two people who are now his gay friends. I am also amazed at how God opens doors so often for Ethan to talk to these people about Christianity and our faith. Ethan is such an incredible man and has such an amazing ability to be a Christian in the world. I'm so thankful that God put him through Christian college so that he would be an educated, informed Christian who could truly minster to his people ... at the golf course, at AT&T and at Apple.

We were so split down the middle this electoral year because, as a followers of Christ, we couldn't fully support either candidate. Instead of trying to decide between the lesser of two evils, it really came down to desperate prayers asking God who he wanted in office this term. Not, if Jesus was an American, who would he vote for? Not, who does the Christian sub-culture say I should vote for?

I'm excited and terrified as a new presidents steps up. He makes me a little uneasy and I'm completely unsure as to where our country is headed as a whole. However, I believe this the man God wants in office and I'm excited for the opportunities God will put before us and the things He will teach us over the next four years. I just pray that we are ready. God is already opening doors for us.
